Retail trading platform Interactive Brokers Group Inc. is set to join the S&P 500 index, replacing Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. in the widely followed benchmark of U.S. stocks. The change will take effect prior to the opening of trading on August 28, 2025, as announced by S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Interactive Brokers, based in Greenwich, Connecticut, has experienced substantial growth in recent years, attracting retail investors through its expanding suite of financial services. As of the end of July, the company reported 3.96 million client accounts, marking a 32% increase compared to the same time last year. Despite its inclusion in the prestigious index, shares of Interactive Brokers fell slightly by 0.1% to $62.70 in midday trading on August 26.

Inclusion in the S&P 500 can enhance a company’s visibility and increase demand for its stock, particularly among passive investment funds that replicate the index. Interactive Brokers' advancement follows a series of notable initiatives, including the expansion of its prediction markets trading service to Canada earlier this year after its success surrounding the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Additionally, the firm has been strengthening its position in the cryptocurrency space by adding new tokens to its platform.

Thomas Peterffy, the billionaire founder of Interactive Brokers, reflected on this milestone with humility: "Several people have contacted me to congratulate, but I said, considering that I have been working at this for the past 48 years, it is not such a remarkable achievement", Peterffy said in an emailed statement.

The move comes as Walgreens Boots Alliance transitions out of the S&P 500, following its acquisition by Sycamore Partners for $10 billion earlier this year. The leveraged buyout was one of the largest since the global financial crisis. As part of the reshuffling, Talen Energy Corp. will replace Interactive Brokers in the S&P MidCap 400 index.

Interactive Brokers' rise to the S&P 500 underscores its growing influence in the financial industry, alongside its commitment to innovation in trading and investment services.
