Investor takeaway: Canada Packers has beaten earnings estimates in one of its last four comparable quarters, matched once and missed twice. The latest declines in sales and adjusted EBITDA add to the concerns, and analysts have lowered their estimate for next quarter. You can review analyst ratings and targets and the company’s stock and financial details as you assess the outlook.

C$0.23 EPS, 8.0% below estimate

Canada Packers’ calendar EPS of C$0.23 missed the C$0.25 estimate. It was also down from C$0.34 in the previous quarter. Sales and adjusted EBITDA both fell from a year earlier.

Bull case

Analysts’ average price target of C$17.60 is about 21% above the last closing price of C$14.55. That points to potential upside if operating conditions improve. The company cited weaker pork cutout values, a weaker Japanese yen and the loss of ham-boning operations to Maple Leaf Foods as pressures on the quarter. Better market conditions could ease some of those pressures, but the results don’t indicate when or how quickly that might happen.

Bear case

The operating results were weak. Sales fell 12.7%, adjusted EBITDA nearly halved from a year earlier, and Canada Packers reported a C$28.1 million net loss, compared with earnings of C$25.6 million a year ago. A C$47.6 million non-cash decline in the fair value of biological assets also weighed on results. Analysts’ next-quarter EPS estimate has dropped from C$0.77 30 days ago to C$0.59. They expect revenue of C$439 million, down 8.9% from a year earlier. At the last close, shares were below their 50-day and 200-day moving averages.
